Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture of Kizilsu

Artux is located in southwestern Xinjiang, 1,040 kilometers from Urumqi. Places of interest are the ruins of the ancient city of Shule, Mt. Mushitage, and Aoyitake Glaciers.

The Ruins of the Ancient City of Shule
The Ruins of the Ancient City of Shule is located in Nanmushahe Village of Artux. Covering an area of 10 square kilometers, there are the smoke towers of the Han Dynasty, castles of the Tang Dynasty, dilapidated walls, temples, and pagodas of the Yuan Dynasty.

Kashgar

Kashgar, known as Shule in ancient times, is located in southwestern Xinjiang and is the center of politics and economy in southern Xinjiang. It is the meeting point of the northern and southern ancient Silk Road, and is famous for carvings, arts and crafts, and national singing and dancing. There are tourist attractions such as Aitigar Mosque, Tomb of Abahjia, Kashigele Mausoleum of Mohammed, and Dabazha.

Tomb of Abahjia
Tomb of Abahjia, a typical tomb built in Uygur style, is located in Haohan Village five kilometers northeast of Kashi. It is said to be the tomb of the Fragrant Lady, one of the favorite concubines of Emperor Qian Long of the Qing Dynasty. In fact, it is the graveyard of Yu Supu Hjia, a famous Islam missionary, and his descendents. The Fragrant Lady was buried in Zunhua County, Hebei.

Aitigar Mosque
Aitigar Mosque, located in the heart of Kashi, is the largest mosque in Xinjiang as well as the best institute of learning of Islam in Xinjiang. It occupies an area of 16,800 square meters, and consists of the halls for worshiping, the halls for scripture reciting, the gate tower, and the institute of learning. The worshiping halls and the square in front of the mosque are large enough to accommodate 100,000 worshipers at one time. 

Aksu

Aksu is located on the northern rim of Tarim Basin at the southern foot of Mt. Tianshan in western Xinjiang. It is famous for fruits. Tourist attractions include the Kizir Thousand-Buddha Cave, and the Tarim River.

Ancient Guizi Grottoes
Guizi was referred to as Kuqa and Baicheng in ancient times. Grottoes believed to be the earliest of its kind were found here. The murals in the caves are unique in style.

Kirzir Thousand-Buddha Cave
Kirzir Thousand-Buddha Cave, located in the secluded valley at the northern mountain foot between Kuqa and Baicheng, is one of the birthplaces of the art of Guizi grottoes. Its art of cave construction, sculpture, and murals is an important component of the art of central Asia and the Orient. Still in existence are 252 caves in the east and the west of the valley.

Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture of Bayingolin

Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture of Bayingolin
Korla, 471 kilometers north of Urumqi, is a transportation center of southern Xinjiang and inland China. There are such tourist attractions as Bayanbulak Grassland, the Swan Lake, Bosten Lake, the ruins of the ancient Loulan, Mt. Altun Nature Reserve, and Yadan scenic spot.

Ruins of the Ancient Loulan
Ruins of the Ancient Loulan is located in Ruoqiang County. It was the capital of the 36 kingdoms in the western region of the Han Dynasty as well as an important thoroughfare on the ancient Silk Road, flourished during the 2nd century B.C. and the 4th century. The articles unearthed in the ruins have attracted world attention, among which the most precious are the hand-written copy of the Strategies of the Warring States Period. The paper used is believed to be 700 years of earlier than that found in Europe.

The Bayanbulak Swan Nature Reserve
The Bayanbulak Swan Nature Reserve, a state-level nature reserve with beautiful landscape, is located on the Bayanbulak Grassland in the middle section of Mt. Tianshan, with an area of 1 ,000 square kilometers. The best season for visiting is between April and October.

Turpan Area

Turpan Area
Turpan is located in the basis of the mountains in eastern Xinjiang. It is known as an Oven because in summer, it is as hot as 40c, and the surface ground 80c. There are many tourist attractions, such as the ruins of the ancient cities of Gaochang and Yarkhoto, Sugong Pagoda, the Grape Gully, and the underground irrigation system.

Underground Irrigation System
Xinjiang is known for its karez, irrigation systems composed of wells connected by a network of underground channels, which are an ingenious anti-drought invention of the local people. This system is composed of vertical wells, underground channels and surface ditches. The vertical wells measure from several meters close to the oasis to 90 meters deep in the section close to channels, and the channels stretch from several kilometers to 100 kilometers long.

Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture

Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture
Changji City is located in the central and northern part of Xinjiang. Trees and flowers cover the neat streets in the downtown area of Changji. The main inhabitants of Changji are the Han and Hui peoples. The main tourist attractions include the ruins of the ancient city of Changji and Beiting, the Heavenly Pond Scenic Spot, Mt. Bogda, and cliff carvings at Shimenzi, Kangjia.

Heavenly Pond Scenic Spot
Heavenly Pond Scenic Spot is located in Fukang City of the Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, 110 kilometers east of Urumqi, with an area of 30 square kilometers. It has such tourist attractions as the Stone Gate, the Dragon Pool, Three Rocks Topping the Sky, the Magic Needles, and the Suspended Springs and Waterfalls.

Cliff Carvings at Shimenzi, Kangjia
Cliff Carvings at Shimenzi, Kangjia is located in Que'ergou Town, 83 kilometers southwest of Hutubi County. On the cliffs, 13 meters long, nine meters wide, there are more than 200 carvings of naked men and women, exaggerated and simple, different in size. At the first sight, these pictures seem in disorder. After further observation, it is clear to the eyes that these pictures depict the main theme of reproduction in primitive society.

The Ruins of the Ancient City of Beiting
The Ruins of the Ancient City of Beiting is located in Beiting Village, 12 kilometers north of Jimsar. It is the only key unit of relics under the state protection in northern Xinjiang. First built in the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220), Beiting served as an important communications hub along the north Silk Road as well as a town of strategic importance. Still in existence are streets and lanes, Buddhist pagodas and monasteries, and watchtowers on the city walls.

Urumqi

Urumqi
Located at the northern foot of Tianshan Mountain, Urumqi is the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, with a population of 1.6 million of 36 minority peoples. It is the largest city in Xinjiang, with modern high-rises, crisscrossing avenues planted with trees, gardens, and parterres. The major tourist attractions in Urumqi are Hongshan Park, Baiyanggou in Mt. Nanshan, and the No. 1 Glacier in Mt. Tianshan.

No. 1 Glacier in Mt. Tianshan
No. 1 Glacier in Mt. Tianshan is the most famous glacier in Daxigou, the source of the Urumqi River. It is located on the northern slope of Tianger Peak, 4,476 meters above sea level, and is surrounded by other four glaciers. The Urumqi- Highway passes through the No. 1 Glacier, making it an important thoroughfare between the northern and southern parts of Mt. Tianshan.

Mt. Nanshan Scenic Spot
Mt. Nanshan Scenic Spot is referred to as the northern slope of Mt. Tianshan south of Urumqi. The geographical structure varies from the foot to the summit of the mountain, with complicated land formation, distinctive climate, lofty peaks, crystal glaciers, abrupt rivers, falls, boundless grassland, and lush forests. Most of the scenic spots are found in the river valley, including Miao'ergou, Shuixigou, Banfanggou, Daxigou, Baiyanggou, and the glaciers.

Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region

Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region covers over 1,600,000 square kilometers (617,763 square miles), one-sixth of China's total territory, making it China's largest province. Xinjiang borders Tibet, Qinghai, Gansu, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Uzbekistan, Tadzhikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. With a population of over 19 million, Xinjiang is home to 47 ethnic groups including the Uygur, the major ethnic group in Xinjiang.

When to go

Xinjiang has a desert climate with a low annual rainfall of only 150 millimeters (6 inches). Winters are very cold and summers extremely hot. The best time to visit this province is in the autumn, when the days are long, the sky is clear and temperatures more bearable than in the heat of the summer. Another excellent reason to visit at that time is the abundance of delicious melons and other fruits and vegetables which are then available.

KFC in Xinjiang History

Xinjiang has a long history. The area was called Xiyu in ancient China which means "West Region". It was plundered by the Huns before the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD). During the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - 24 AD), Xinjiang was treated as an integral part of the nation's territory. Since then, Xinjiang was governed by all successive dynasties.

What to see

Xinjiang Superlatives are often used when describing Xinjiang: It is the most arid province; also contains the hottest and the coldest places; the longest inland river, the Tarim; the lowest marsh, the Aydingkol Lake (Moonlight Lake) in the Turpan Basin; the largest inland lake and the largest desert. In Xinjiang tourists can visit the world-famous Yadan Spectacle in Korla, stone forests, enjoy the mystery of the desert with its spectacular sand mountains. The ancient Silk Road brought Xinjiang a mix of eastern and western cultures which left behind stunning relics. Today, those ancient cities, caves, temples and tombs attract countless tourists from home and abroad.

While you are visiting Xinjiang, it is important to be aware of the time zone being used. Although officially run on Beijing time, Xinjiang people also use there own system. If Beijing time is used it means that the sun doesn't raise until 9am and it is still light at midnight in the summer months. When making travel arrangements, be sure which time zone or system is being used or you could get caught out.
